Shopian,08/12/2025: Residents of Ganie Mohalla in Kutpora, Shopian district, held a protest on Monday against a prolonged drinking water crisis lasting two months, despite multiple complaints to authorities going unaddressed. Women carrying empty containers joined the demonstration, voicing frustration over reliance on distant, contaminated sources that heighten health risks for families.
Protesters reported recent jaundice outbreaks in the area, with two to three ongoing cases posing severe threats to children and the elderly, linking the illness directly to unsafe water use. Shopian has seen recurring such incidents tied to water contamination, prompting past interventions by health officials and even NGT directives.
Despite repeated appeals to concerned departments yielding only assurances, no effective restoration of potable supply has occurred. Locals demanded immediate action from higher authorities to avert a larger public health disaster, echoing similar protests in nearby Shopian villages.
